Gillnet fishermen are appalled that DFO has not made arrangements with the Gwa'sala-'Nakwaxda'xw Nations to access and operate the Docee Fence in 2017.

The Southeast Alaska chum salmon harvest in 2017 is over 7 million fish - but it peaked earlier than usual.

Bristol Bay Catches to July 18, 2017exceed expectations at a 52.7 million run size and a catch of 35.2 million.

Bristol Bay is fished at an Exploitation Rate of 67%

Answer  to Union's July 10 letter

"The Department appreciates the frustration that has been caused by not having the Docee Fence in operation this season...

"The Department is committed to resolving the issues [between the DFO and GNN]....

"However, if issues with  the operation of the Docee fence continue, [in 2018+] the Department is prepared to consider alternate methods of assessing in-season sockeye abundance in Smith's Inlet, such as a test fishery...

   SOUTHEAST ALASKA  PINK  FISHERY to August 18, 2017

The Southeast Alaska pink salmon harvest in 2017 wass predicted to be in the strong range with an estimate of 43 million fish - above the recent 10-year average harvest of 39 million pink salmon.
